Cat-PHISHing: Spot the Scam Before It Breaks Your Heart… or Bank PART 2

They’re different than they seemed

You matched with someone who said they were a 31-year-old pastry chef in Brooklyn who loves dogs, and looking for something long-term. Then he tells you he’s moving in two months, but would still like to chill. Or they’re in finance, but suddenly they’re a crypto investor in Dubai who, maybe “just flew in,” and asking if you want to know more about what they do? No, thank you.

A bio isn’t the sole indicator of a person, sure. However, money isn’t the only thing you can be scammed out of, you can burn out from emotional labor. Pay attention to inconsistencies like age, location, lifestyle, tone, even how they type.

Our tip? If the vibe is off, don’t gaslight yourself. People can change, but shouldn’t flip personalities.

Not a fairytale

The right conversations feel good. They won’t leave you wondering if you’re being too cautious, reserved, or asking for too much space. Someone who’s genuinely into you will enjoy the journey with you, and that does not always involve your bank account or personal info, if that’s not your thing. You deserve to feel curious, excited, and safe. Not paranoid.

Our tip? Build up to what makes you comfortable. Don’t be afraid to say what doesn’t.

So what should you do?

If you start to feel… duped, report it. Use Chyrpe’s in-app features to flag suspicious behavior. We’ll look into it with no judgment, and no hesitation. Think of us as your digital investigator who has your best interest at heart.

At the end of the day, online dating should feel like an adventure, not an episode of Catfish. Stay aware, stay empowered, and remember: you’ve got a whole community, and app, to back you up.

Keep matching safely,

Chyrpe Team
